Do we Know the Hebrew Alphabet?

How many consonants did Hebrew have?

This is a trick question. The answer depends on what you mean by a consonant: spoken or written. Today everybody knows we count 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. But everybody knows, and forgets, that it has 23 consonants: original sin is still with us. Sorry.

Writing is the only way we can learn what the ancients said, but writing is not language. And as writing reveals, it always conceals something of what it transmits.

There's no better example of this than the way writing masks the sounds of speech even as it immortalizes them. Since the 19th century, scholars have argued that there were actually 25 sounds in ancient Hebrew and Aramaic: it was long ago noted that the Septuagint distinguished original ghayin and kha in many place names and other transliterations. During the 80's, Richard Steiner first realized that there was an entire Aramean religious liturgy--really a kind of alternate-universe Hebrew Bible, including a pagan version of Psalm 20 with Baal instead of the Lord, and mourning for an Exile (with the Assyrians around, lots of people got exiled), transcribed into Demotic in Egypt, that distinguished these two consonants.

The Hebrew and Aramaic writing systems had concealed some of the most basic facts of Hebrew and Aramaic from us for almost 2,000 years. This has to do with their own histories--they're both derived from Phoenician, which lost those two sounds, along with original sin, sometime before the first Phoenician writing (11th century B.C.E., depending on what you mean by "Phoenician").

I stole the lousy sin joke from Richard Steiner, who has just published the definitive treatment of all these issues in the new Journal of Biblical Literature. The answer to the question of when, and how, Hebrew went from having 25 consonants to 23 holds lessons for us about the relationship between writing and language, as well as for when different parts of the Septuagint were created.

This is my idea of news, and as usual I got it from Jim Davila.

Seth L. Sanders:

How many Hebrew words are in the first sentence of the Bible that references Abraham (Abram)? Genesis 11: 26 It would be nice if there were exactly 12 Hebrew words, because Genesis ends with Jacob's 12 sons becoming the tribes of Israel.

There seem to be either 11 words or 12 words in that verse, depending on how one counts it. The key here would seem to be the word/words immediately preceding the word "Haran". In English, two words would precede Haran: "and to". But in modern Hebrew Bibles, the word/words "and to" are written with no space in between them, as if these two English words were but a single word in Hebrew. Just before this, we have "to Abram" and "to Nahor", so we are certain that in Hebrew, "to" in this construction can stand alone.

The question is whether in Biblical times, especially before the 6th century BCE, were the Hebrew words "and to" in a construction like this written as two separate words? Or perhaps even more to the point, on an ORAL basis, would these two words be treated by an oral audience as being two separate words prior to the 6th century BCE? Or am I sunk here, with Biblical Hebrew being clear that the two words "and to" in English are but one word, "andto" (or "and-to"), in Hebrew, and were always only one word in Hebrew from the earliest times?

I recently received some interesting information on this question from Mechon-Mamre Bible translating organization in Jerusalem. (It was a thrill to get an E-mail directly from Jerusalem.)

In counting the number of Hebrew "words" in Genesis 11: 26, which is the first sentence of the Biblical account of the Patriarchs (the first mention in the Bible of Abram/Abraham), Hebrew grammarians would ordinarily not count the number of "words", narrowly defined, but rather would count the number of Hebrew "word groupings", or "teyvah". The Hebrew word "teyvah" is often said to mean either "ark" or "word", but I think it literally means "box", and as such refers in a grammatical context to word groupings, not necessarily to individual words. In particular, each hyphenated word in Hebrew is counted as a single "teyvah" or word grouping. On this basis, the Mechon-Mamre Bible translating organization in Jerusalem says that there are 7 "teyvah"/words in Genesis 11: 26. The number 7 is a sacred number.

From what I can tell by looking at the Hebrew text, it is incontrovertible that there are exactly 7 word groupings/"teyvah" in Genesis 11: 26.

But there are four hyphenated words in Genesis 11: 26 in Hebrew; four of the "teyvah" are hyphenated words. Each such hyphenated Hebrew word in fact contains two or three entirely separate concepts/words, if the term "word" is narrowly defined. The first Hebrew "word"/"teyvah", for example, is "And-lived-Terah". If that hyphenated Hebrew word grouping is counted as being three separate words (three separate concepts), and the other three hyphenated Hebrew word groupings are each counted as being two words ("to-Abram" and "and-to-Haran" thus each being counted as two words, though each is but one word grouping/"teyvah"), then this first sentence of the Biblical account of the Patriarchs would be viewed as containing 12 individual Hebrew words.

These 12 individual Hebrew words appear in 7 Hebrew word groupings/7 "teyvah" at Genesis 11: 26. Both 12 and 7 are sacred numbers in Genesis.

Thus if one counts first word groupings/"teyvah", and then one counts individual words, in the first sentence of the Bible that mentions Abram/Abraham, the result is as follows: (1) there clearly are 7 word groupings/"teyvah" in Genesis 11: 26, with 7 being an important sacred number in Genesis, and (2) there may be, depending on how one counts it, 12 individual words in Genesis 11: 26, with 12 being an even more sacred number in Genesis.

Seth, I would appreciate your comments on this.

Seth Sanders:

After doing a little research, this is what I have come up with. What do you think?

PARSING GENESIS 11: 26

A. Counting the Number of "Teyvah" in Genesis 11: 26

(Note: "Teyvah" means "box" or "ark" or "word". In Hebrew grammar, "teyvah" really means "word grouping", or "a box of words", which often consists of a single word, but often as not consists of several separate Hebrew words.)

1. Lived-Terah (or "Andlived-Terah", or "(And)lived-Terah, or, in conversational English, "Terah, having lived)

2. seventy

3. years,

4. gavebirth (or "andgavebirth", or "(and)(he)gavebirth") [There is no exact English equivalent to this Hebrew word, though the meaning is very clear. In Hebrew, (i) this is one word, not two words, (ii) it readily applies to a man as well as a woman, and, importantly here, (iii) it must then be followed by the preposition "to" (which is why the English word "sire" doesn't work well here). So I have made up a one-word English word here: "givebirth" or "gavebirth".]

5. to-Abraham

6. to-Nahor

7. andto-Nahor [Note that here in #A-7, unlike #A-1 and #A-4, the English word "and" is mandatory, not optional, because here in #A-7, unlike #A-1 and #A-4, the only meaning of the Hebrew "vav" is "and", which here exclusively means "plus", and has nothing to do with whether the verb is reporting past events.]

Conclusion: There are exactly 7 "teyvah" in Genesis 11: 26.

This part of the analysis is not controversial.

B. Counting the Number of Individual Hebrew Words in Genesis 11: 26

1. Lived- (or "Andlived", or "(And)lived-, or "having lived"). [The word "And" here is not a separate Hebrew word here, because it can be omitted in English, and perhaps should be omitted in English. The meaning of the Hebrew "vav" here is, either primarily or exclusively, that the verb "lived" is reporting past events. That is to say, "vav" here effectively is simply the "d" at the end of the English word "lived", rather than "vav" being a separate Hebrew word with an independent meaning.]

2. Terah

3. seventy

4. years,

5. gavebirth (or "andgavebirth", or "(and)(he)gavebirth"). [See analysis in #B-1 above: "and" is optional here, and perhaps not even correct. "Vav" here is not an independent concept, and hence should not be treated as being a separate Hebrew word. It merely changes what otherwise would be "givebirth" to "gavebirth".]

6. to-

7. Abraham

8. to-

9. Nahor

10. and
[(a) First, see #A-7 above. Here in #B-10, unlike #B-1 and #B-5, the English word "and" is mandatory, not optional, because here in #B-10, unlike #B-1 and #B-5, the only meaning of the Hebrew "vav" is "and", which here exclusively means "plus", and has nothing to do with whether the verb is reporting past events.
(b) Note that here in #B-10, unlike #B-1 and #B-5, the Hebrew "vav" has a clear and distinct meaning, apart from any verb, with "vav" here meaning "and" or "plus", pure and simple. "Vav" in this connection is a separate Hebrew word.
(c) Long after the Biblical account of the Patriarchs in Genesis had been an oral tradition for many centuries, a convention in Hebrew writing developed. That convention holds that in writing out Hebrew, "vav" is never written as a separate word, but is always appended to the following word. That is the convention for Hebrew writing, regardless of whether "vav" is merely meaning that the appended verb is reporting past events (where this written convention makes complete sense), or whether "vav" is completely independent from any verb, and rather simply means, pure and simple, "and" or "plus". But in the prior oral tradition, where the Biblical account of the Patriarchs was born, in those cases where "vav" meant "and" or "plus" pure and simple, certainly "vav" in those cases would have been heard as, and would have been understood as being, a completely separate word. Solely for convenience in writing, early on the decision was made to attach "and" to the next word. But where "vav" clearly means "and" or "plus", that is a separate Hebrew word, regardless of this particular writing custom that was later adopted for written narrative Hebrew prose.]

11. to- [There is no separation in written Hebrew between the two components of "andto", nor is there a dash. See discussion above and below.]

12. Nahor

Conclusion: There are exactly 12 separate Hebrew words in Genesis 11: 26.

(Note that counting 12 separate Hebrew words in Genesis 11: 26 is in no way inconsistent with counting 7 "teyvah" in Genesis 11: 26. The two concepts are different, that's all.)

Yes, this is controversial. Most people would count only 11 separate Hebrew words. In written Hebrew, perhaps going all the way back to Biblical times, "andto" is written as a single word, without a hyphen, and is part (but not all) of a "teyvah". If "andto" were counted as being but a single Hebrew word, then there would be only 11 separate Hebrew words in Genesis 11: 26.

But though "andto" is written as a single word in Hebrew, it nevertheless is two words, and would have been considered two separate Hebrew words before Hebrew narrative prose writing was invented, which was long after the composition of the Biblical account of the Patriarchs in Genesis.

If, and only if, the Hebrew "vav" clearly, and unequivocally, solely means "and" or "plus", and is not (primarily or exclusively) determining that a verb is reporting past events, then "vav" in that particular context, and only in that context, should be considered to be a separate Hebrew word, despite the longstanding custom that in writing out Hebrew narrative prose, the "vav" (meaning "and" or "plus") is appended to the following word. When "vav" is used in that precise context, it means "and" or "plus", pure and simple, and indeed is a separate word, notwithstanding any longstanding custom that it is not to be separated out from the following word in writing out Hebrew narrative prose.

Finding an SEO expert is really hard to do. There are many self proclaimed who sound very convincing. What I have found out is the best SEO experts are the individual who work at their own sites using 3 main techniques: 1. Finding a way to add fresh content to their site on a daily basis. 2. Using SEO friendly forums or shopping carts to make your site huge 3. Link building. One way links, traded links and 3 way linking on SEO friendly sites. There are tools available now that allow people to do these on their own. Thanks! SEO Expert

There I was having one of those happy go-lucky days and then this gal I am dating tells me, after she is playing with her tarot cards, that someone in my family is going to die. This was like something out of a movie or something, or her telling me something out of the ordinary about Best mortgage rates in the uk, but she was totally serious. Little did I know she had another detail about an occurrence that was about to happen that would really make me believe that she was for real. Then, a few days later, I got the call. Woah!
